What is BPH?

Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) is an enlargement of the prostate gland. As the gland swells it presses on the urethra resulting in a variety of symptoms including painful urination, reduced flow, difficulty starting or stopping flow and increased frequency urinating at night. BPH is common in men over 40 years of age. Scientists estimate 50-60% of all men will develop BPH in their lifetime. The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research estimates that of 6 million men ages 50-79 suffering from BPH, only half seek a physician’s treatment.
