Initial exposure to the chickenpox virus, Varicella-Zoster Virus (VSV), may occur up to 21 days before symptoms appear, either by direct contact or airborne transmission. During this time, the infected individual is generally miserable, feverish and appears to have a cold. However, chickenpox is not usually diagnosed until after the appearance of pox.

Pox, or "spots," are actually watery blisters that crust over quickly, but remain extremely itchy until the scabs naturally fall off. This is why, even though chickenpox is sometimes considered an unavoidable phase of childhood, it should be taken seriously and treated as soon as possible.
